Memphis papers lag behind in coverage of championship game

After a few weeks of few upsets and a lot of great basketball, Kansas was finally crowned NCAA champion last night in their 75-68 overtime win over the Memphis Tigers. Hey, at least MSU can say it lost to the runner-up right?

Looking through this mornings papers, the coverage of the game varies from paper to paper. The Lawrence Journal World and News has a big story and lots of photo galleries.

The University Daily Kansan has coverage of the game and the team from all sorts of angles. There's a story on police keeping order during the game, a story on how local businesses are benefiting from the team's success, and then of course the coverage of the game itself. The Web site even says classes were canceled today to celebrate the win.

On the other side, the Memphis Flyer has a game recap but not much else from last night. It looks like there was a lot of coverage leading up to the game, but not much afterwards.

I find this somewhat odd, but even a bigger paper like the Nashville Tennessean ran an AP story of the game instead of using one of it's own reporters.

None of the stories seemed to come up with great headlines either to entice the reader into reading them. The Kansan has a big banner headline proclaiming "Champions" but that's it. It seems the Kansas papers had more coverage while on the surface the Tennessee papers may have been a bit more low-key about it. I suppose it all depends on the space a paper has to run a big story like this and the resources it has to cover the event.
