Journalists: Global Watchdogs

This post is for those of you who are interested in investigative journalism. While at a seminar put on by Brant Houston of IRE.org or the group of Investigative Reporters Editors, I learned of a global group of investigative journalists.

The group called Global Investigative Journalism, is a group of journalists who correspond with one another from accross the world. The non-profit organization encourages it's members to share ideas and experiences with one another on how to break better investigative stories. The group contains members from Asia, Africa Austrailia, Canada, Central America, Europe, Mexico, the Middle East, South America and the USA. They also have a global directory of journalists on thier site containing an archive of different stories they've broke.

The group members also work together to watch over multinational coorporations that may otherwise slip under the radar of journalists. It's refreshing to see journalists working together from all over the world to improve the way we do reporting. I love the fact that even though they are loyal to thier own publication and of course want to break the story first aren't hesitating to share thier ideas with other publication so they can improve as well. So many times you see publications within the same city in constant competition with one another over every story that breaks. It makes me wonder if even simple stories within one city could be done better if only publications could for one moment stop competing and really focus on great journalism.

Like they say, two heads are better than one.
